More than 300 people were consulted during autumn 2008 to identify their top concerns for Bampton, Burford and Carterton. The top priorities were:

  1. Anti-social behaviour. The groups of young people in public places are of good nature but a few get themselves drunk and cause problems.
  2. Lack of facilities for young people. Work is being done to reopen Bampton Youth Club and Carterton late night Café, and ensure adequate transport to Witney for young people locally.
  3. Speeding is a concern in Bampton, Burford and Carterton areas. The issue is being addressed by Roads Policing using speeding detection equipment and community awareness days.

These issues are now being tackled by the Neighbourhood Action Group, made up of local residents and partnership organisations. Information about what is being done is contained in the What's happening in my Neighbourhood section below.

You can fill in an engagement survey by downloading the form here.

The neighbourhood team is holding a "Have Your Say" meeting on Monday 12 July, 7pm, at the families centre at RAF Brize Norton. Partner agencies will also be present so pop along to discuss any local concerns or issues.

July 2010

Anti-social Behaviour

Despite the very warm weather Carterton has not seen a major increase in anti–social behaviour. Marigold Square on Shilton Park has remained relatively quiet and the town centre in Carterton has also been fairly quiet.

An operation to provide an extra officer on our busy nights, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, has been running this month, centered around Carterton and appears to have been a success.

Other problems in Carterton are drivers sitting in their vehicles in the town centre car park and playing very loud music. The team is aware of this problem and we are endeavoring to the catch the individuals concerned. A couple of individuals were arrested for public order offences this month and we hope that this will send a message to the rest of the youths that such behaviour will not be tolerated.

Groups of youths have been congregating on the recreation ground and the major issue concerning them has been the amount of litter that they leave around.

Bampton has seen a few instances of anti–social behaviour again, mostly in and around the market square. This also seems to involve anti–social use of vehicles by sounding horns and playing loud music. However, like Carterton, bearing in mind the type of weather we are having the instances have been very few and far between.

Burford has also seen very few instances of anti-social behaviour. A few have occurred in and around the Guildenford car park, where, like Bampton, drivers are sounding horns and playing loud music.

The team has been greatly assisted by the Special Constabulary who have patrolled with us or on their own. This a valuable resource which the Carterton team greatly appreciates. The Royal Air Force police are also patrolling the Married Quarter patch. All these resources assist in raising public confidence and reassurance.

Speeding

The team has been out with the Speed Indicator Device and laser gun device at Shilton Road in Carterton and Burford Road by the A40. Speed checks were also carried out in Bampton and Lew. The core shift from Witney carried out a speed check in Brize Norton, near to the bridge. The Special Constabulary also carried out speed checks during a Friday evening in and around Carterton.

Youth Facilities

The Allendale Youth Centre continues to offer many opportunities for youngsters in Carterton. The club is open on several evenings during the week and has some excellent facilities. In addition, they offer Bodyzone after school. This is an excellent facility which is seeing an increase in attendees. The outreach workers continue to do an excellent job, working with the neighbourhood team on a Friday evening.

The Bampton Youth Club is well established now and numbers attending is good. The youth club meets on a Monday evening and offers a wide range of activities. If you have not been to the youth club, and you are within the age range then it is well worth a visit.

Other news

The team attended the Royal Air Force Families Day and provided hi-vis support to the Royal Air and Ministry of Defence Police. Roads Policing also came along with a car, motorbike and exhibition stand.
